This week kicked off a lot of events for the JSA. Everyones doing their part to jump into the season, even if the weather has been quite tricky, it still is that time of the year again!

Kicking off the Opti game was the Shelter Island Yacht Club Opti-A Regatta on Tuesday the 7th. The racing started out in a 10-12 knot breeze and looked as though it would build. During the white fleet race the wind really picked up, and out of 38 boats only 7 finished! The winds whipped up to 17 knots creating a field of daggerboards sticking in the air. White fleet sailors were towed in while the red and blue fleet sailed one more race together. Everyone got in just in time for a major Shelter Island storm to come rolling in. The kids had fun thought and no one was hurt, not even an Opti!

Here are the results from SIYC

-- Another regatta that made a splash this week was Eastern Districts at Norwalk Yacht Club on Wednesday the 8th. The breeze was pretty fluky all day but they had better luck than the West, getting three races completed. The RC made note of a couple things. First being that most of the sailors were very polite, giving thanks to the RC after each race. Nice Guys! BUT unfortunately some instructors were seen not wearing their PFD correctly. Uh-Oh, some people are in the Dog House! Lastly, the absence of any Bluejays from participating has forced the RC to drop Bluejays from the NOR/SI! Very sad indeed.

Cloudy with a chance of...Optis!

Are those clouds on the horizon? Nope, it's a fleet of Optimists!

01_0A
The forecast called for partly cloudy skies, but in our JSA forecast it called for Optis. The Douglaston Yacht Club located in Little Neck, NY, was flooded with Optimists sailors early on the morning of July 9th. The Area A Opti Regatta had a beautiful northerly breeze, perfect for the youngsters. Along with the Opti sailors were their token Opti parents, helping the young kids unload their boats. Opti sailors are by far the funniest to watch. Some finely tune and rig their vessels, while others shove off the dock still tying eight knots!

The racing began around 11:30, starting the red, blue, and white fleets separately. The 5-8 knot breeze started North and clocked left frequently throughout the day. The breeze held but with clear pressure differences throughout the race course. The RC ran port triangles with the start and finish on either side of the committee boat mid course. Finish

While getting out to the action, I had the pleasure of encountering some of Centerport Yacht Club's proud Opti parents. The moms and dads of CYC gladly watched their kids make their way around the buoys. Camera's flashing and smiles showing almost made me wish my parents were there! The friendly bunch encouraged their kids after each race, but of course being sailors themselves had a few pointers to give out. At times the cheers turned to uh-ohs, but the excitement of watching their kids overruled.
13_12A

The CYC clan had a great start to the day, winning each bullet for all three fleets. I had the chance to speak with Peter Sterflinger, the hot handed red fleet sailor.

When asked about his first place performances so far all he could say was, "Better than Tuesday! I had a 6th then capsized in the second race."

With four years in Optis, his red streamer pre-qualifies him for JSA Champs. A man of few words, but when asked about what he carried in his life jacket pocket he replied, "Sail ties, a sharpie, boaters license, and advil for headaches/migraines." This guy means business!

After race two, I got the chance to speak with Jerry Callan, also a 13 year old Centerport sailor. Jerry's been in Optis for 6 years and knows the game pretty well. His experience at the regatta was full of great observations.

"It's a lot of fun sailing here, you can kinda see the skyline. My first race went not so well, second race I got in the rythm but then fell apart a boat length from the line. You have good races and bad races." Well said Jerry, well said.

19_18A

The action never stopped all day running four great races. Great job all you Optis, keep doing what you do! Check out Results on the JSA website! Don't forget to check out photos from the regatta on the left-hand column.

Wild Wild Western Districts

There's no cowboys or indians on this range, just some down home              sailors lookin' to get a few races in!                          05_4A

Western Districts. The first chance for any sailor to qualify for JSA Champs. The same regatta also happens for the Eastern District. Norwalk and Noroton split up the boat classes between the two clubs. On the other hand, for Western Districts all boats are sailed out of Sea Cliff Yacht Club, New York.

The expression Wild Wild West should mean, lots of action right? WRONG! Western Districts saw anything but action this year. Past years have also been very light, I mean very light, to the point of calling races for the day due to lack of wind. The Long Island Sound is notorious for this type of weather, but this regatta especially is notorious for sunshine and no breeze. The small ripples of one or two puffs may fool the Race Committee, but the sailors know, its just false hope.

Kyle Riviezzo, 18, from Head of the Bay Club has experienced his fair share of Western Districts. This regatta did not surprise the wise young man. "I can remember a lot of districts being like this, the best regatta to get a tan at." True statement!
14_13A

This year's Western Districts saw a nice NW breeze, looking as though it would keep. It wasn't too long before the breeze died and the first race was at a standstill. The race which seemed like forever had many finishers receive TLE's (Time Limit Expired). The boats that did finish 20 minutes after the first boat crossed the line were scored for the day. All the rest drifted slowly through time. The wind picked up again for a little. This time moving a bit more towards the West. Another race was started for the 420s, and quickly abandoned due to, you guessed it, no wind!

So here are the results of the one and only raced scored. I guess you really could say there's no other one quite like it!

So even though it was one of those days on the LI Sound we all dislike, everyone definitely made it work, and a special thanks to the RC for getting one race off so people could have a chance to qualify.
Congrats to all those on their way to Champs! For a closer look at results go to the JSA website.

Stickin' it to the LAW

Getting the inside scoop with people who have crossed the line, start and finish.

14_13A

The Law Trophy regatta may have been two days, with only 5 races, but that doesn't mean the competitors didn't fight 'til the finish. The fluky light wind of day 1 made the competitors inconsistent, and only allowed for 4 races . Day 2 also saw light wind, but this time the RC could only complete one race due to bad weather coming in from the North. The Windward-Leeward and Triangle courses were run at the RC's discretion both days. Competitors had a bit of wet weather right before awards, but amongst the crazy de-rigging I got a chance to sneak in an interview with some of the talented sailors.

Elliot Morrill and Spencer McDonough were crowned this years 420 fleet winners. Both are native to Indian Harbor Yacht Club and are sharing their first time at Law together! The 16 and 14 year old may be small from their days in Optis but their speed and talent is BIG. Of course when the boys are questioned about their win they modestly say,"We did well overall, but felt the consistency could've been better." Spoken like a true sport that Spencer McDonough. The boys are headed up towards Newport for a clinic at Roger Williams University, and will be competing next in the Coastal Living Regatta, also in Newport. Go get 'em boys!

On the Laser Radial side of things, Sarah Stubbs,15, from American also had a few modest comments to mention about her performance. "I did well, but could've done better. My first two races weren't as good as the rest. Today went a lot better by getting a third." Sarah placed 8th overall, her best Law performance yet. You go girl!

 12_11A
Sarah also sailed recently up in Canada at the Buffalo Canoe Club for Laser/Radial North Americans. Sarah has been to large regattas before and seems to like the feel of sailing around all ages. "I like the regattas with a lot of different age groups, a lot of people have the attitude of just having fun, its a nice change." For results of Laser North Americans go to 2009 Laser NA's.

Congrats to Elliot, Spencer, and Sarah for their great work out there. And a big congrats to all the JSA sailors who participated. For full results go to JSA Online

No Rules, Just Law

A prestigious way to open the season for select sailors in the JSA.

17_16

The 2009 Commodore Law Trophy Regatta commenced after two days of sailing out of Indian Harbor Yacht Club. Greenwich Connecticut and Indian Harbor especially, have been seeing a lot of junior sailing action in the past week. The Law Trophy almost emulates the Youth Champ Regatta that was finished just last Tuesday. Both regattas require a sailing application to attend, complete with resume type questions. The top 40% in JSA can be considered for the event. A look at the top 40% from 2008, and a list of qualifications needed can be seen on our website, JSALIS.ORG

The selected competitors work hard, attending the Advanced Racing Clinic, or just practice on their own in preparation for the event. Monday morning hits and they all have one goal in common; make it to the next round. Placing first in the C420, and first/second in the Laser classes allows the competitors to move on the Area B Semi-Finals for the Bemis and Smythe Championships, which will be held this year July 28-29th, at Bellport Yacht Club on Long Island.  Another US Sailing Championship Regatta will be held right in out own backyards, how lucky are we to get all the action??

14_13   As for young competitors at the Law Trophy, the competition never died, even if the wind did! The first day of races was a gorgeous summer day we all have been waiting for, but then again it meant, light wind. The competitors took it with stride and made best of the four races completed. A shifty oscillating breeze of about 3-5 knots only made the kids pray for another day.

Day two boasted yet another gorgeous day, but a midst the sun and haze, loomed some awfully dark clouds. The racing began at noon, and only allowed the Race Committee to complete one race. With upset looks and confused faces on most of the coaches we all headed in to find a large thunderhead right above the yacht club.  Within minutes the storm erupted and wind picked up a knot or two, to say the least. Gusts definitely in the teens, possibly higher, and buckets of rain flooded the area. Masts went down, kids went running, and all of a sudden it looked like WWIII! But alas the rain ceased just in time for kids to load trailers and accept awards.

Some Congrats are in Order...

Here at the JSA Blog, we love hearing stories and seeing familiar names on results, not only within our sailing community, but on the outside as well.

The past couple days have been filled with big events that include some sailors who are familiar to the JSA waters. Both the Youth Champs and Laser/Radial North Americans have seen loads of JSA names and we would just like to take the time to recognize those individuals for all their hard work.

  • 420- Luke Vreeland (Bay Head Yacht Club) 23rd
  • Laser- Collin Leon (Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club) 15th
  • Laser-Ben Leibowitz (Stamford Yacht Club) 16th
  • Laser-Patrick Mignon (Bay Head Yacht Club) 18th
  • We would also like to include all the LISOT participants from the previous post
 Laser/Radial North Americans

  • Radial-Sarah Stubbs (American Yacht Club) 104th

There's No Place Like Home

Local LISOT sailors travel quite a bit, so it's nice when the event is right in their own backyards.

LISOT, a small privately funded sailing foundation has taken the Youth Championship by storm. The young sailors are from yacht clubs all around the Long Island Sound, and know the area probably better than anyone at the regatta. The light air conditions were something they were very familiar with of course.

The sailors who were selected for the event included; 29er- Olivia Crane (Noroton YC) /Ali Blumenthal (Bellport Bay YC), C420- Markus Edegran/Teddy Mark (Larchmont YC), Deidre Lambert Portland YC,ME) /Tracy Doherty (Sea Cliff YC), Chanel Miller (FL) /Rebecca Liggins (Larchmont YC), Andrew Mollerus (Larchmont YC) /Charlie Peck (Niantic Bay YC), and Declan Whitmyer (Noroton YC) /Ian Storck (Centerport YC).

After racing on the final day, which turned out to be the windiest of all days, I got a chance to talk with some of the LISOT Sailors. I

Declan Whitmyer and Ian Storck, both 15 years old, told me about how they have been sailing with LISOT since their Opti days. They have made the switch to C420s and competed in Youth Champs this year each for their first time. Declan, the skipper, commented on the racing as a whole,

"It was all about consistency, we didn't do as well as we had wanted to but it went okay for the most part." For their first time at Youths, coming in 9th overall wasn't too shabby. Good job boys!
I also had the chance to interview Andrew Mollerus and Charlie Peck. The boys, 15 and 16 years old, have been with LISOT for about 3 years. The pair had just joined forces in late fall to prepare for their first regatta, The Orange Bowl, FL. The crew, Charlie Peck, seemed a little bummed at their performance.

"We didn't do as well as we had hoped, probably upper teens in most races. I thought it was a hard event overall. It was tough to be consistent with the breeze, and top tens mattered more than anything else."

The boys shouldn't be too bummed though, they are off to French Nationals July 10th. Good luck, and au revoir!

Youth Champs- BREEZE ON!

Who knew the final hours of Youth Champs would be the breeziest?

The US Sailing Youth Championship Regatta came down to its final races today. The whole regatta was sailed in 10 knots or less until the last day. A beautiful sunny morning came along with a consistent 12-15 knot breeze starting from the South and oscillating slightly right and back. The competitors all were relieved at the steadiness and wished it had blown like that all week! The playing field was definitely more level, and the teams used to sailing in bigger breeze finally got to show off their stuff.
09_8A

Grass Island Marina Facility was the launching site for the competitors. Indian Harbor was the host club, but majority of the on-land festivities were held at this venue just across the inlet. The facility had a great view of the harbor and a nice ramp for launching. Volunteers for the event helped each kid into and out of the water everyday, making the event a great team effort by all.

With great volunteers, good wind, and even better competition, the last day of racing definitely made for awesome spectating. The trapeze were up and the bows were down. All competitors, from the 29ers to the Lasers, worked hard through the chop and made the windward- leeward courses seem like a breeze. Each class had a series of races to complete with the exception of the 420 class which only had one race scheduled.

After a great day of racing the results showed a surprising twist. Out of the 4 boat classes, two of them were won by West Coast sailors, Laser- Zeke Horowitz (Team FOR), and 29er- Antoine Screve/James Moody (SFYC). While the C420 class came down to the wire with Stephanie Hudson (Lake Beluah YC) and Rebecca King (California YC) beating the So-Cal team of Kevin Laube (Mission Bay YC) and Reece Bernet (Southwestern YC) by just 3 points. The Radial class was also a close one with Christopher Stocke (Sarasota Youth Prgm) beating the second place Cali man Nevin Snow (SDYC) by only 6 points. 22_21A

A great effort made by all and special thanks to Indian Harbor Yacht Club for getting a great event in youth sailing to Long Island Sound! For Full results go to Youth Champs Online.

Youth Champs- West Coast, the Best Coast?

They flew a long way across the country, and they don't wanna go home empty handed...

12_11A
The young California sailors who stand proud in this picture are some of Youth Champ's hot hands this year. The young competitors hale from Southern California in the areas of San Diego and Newport Harbor. They are representing numerous yacht clubs including; San Diego Yacht Club; Mission Bay Yacht Club, Southwestern Yacht Club, and Newport Harbor Yacht Club

Some of the competitors are being privately coached by Tyler Sinks, BC '11; the former two-time 420 class Youth Champion. Tyler packed his wisdom of the boat and some tiny tips he has for sailing in unpredictable breeze (very helpful for the sound). The sailors experience a slightly different scene back in their full year round summer setting. The breeze is usually steady and a regatta report time is usually a lot less early, which meant they all got the same reality wake up call...Literally. The cool Californians may be adjusting to the new setting, but the sailing is something they surely don't need to be introduced to. Most of the sailors are placed within the top ten, and some even fighting for first!

Kevin Laube (Mission Bay YC) and Reece Bernet (Southwestern YC) are leading the 420 class with 62 points just 3 less than the second place boat of Stephanie Hudson (Lake Beulah YC/Chicago YC) and Rebecca King (California YC). Both skipper and crew hale from San Diego, and are going to be seniors in high school this upcoming September. The second place boat had a strong lead the whole regatta up until today when the boys placed well ahead of the competition.

When asked about the event both boys said the same thing-"hard venue." With big shifts and dying/building breeze throughout each day of racing so far, the boys have definitely been keeping their sanity.

Kevin admits it isn't just the breeze making the regatta intense. "I'm definitely enjoying the regatta; the high level of competition especially. It's forcing me to be more focused because of the trickier sailing. Every race counts."

23_22
A high level of competition is right, but from what part of the country is it coming from? The West Coasty's definitely aren't fooling around in any breeze. Their attitude may be laid back but they keep the intensity turned on when it comes to their sailing. Who knows, we may even have another California 420 Youth Champion for the third year in a row! Go get 'em boys! Get full results of all the competitors at Youth Champs Online

Port Washington Yacht Club Reporting for Duty

It's a dirty job, but someone's gotta do it!

P1010416

It's a Thursday afternoon and the Port Washington crew has been out and about since early in the AM getting a jump start to the season. The 12 instructor squad has been at the club each day since Monday the 22nd. The start of the season may begin for the kids next Monday the 29th, but for the instructors the season has officially come to order.

Port Washington Yacht club will be host to up to 150 sailors this summer. The program has been home to hundreds of JSA sailors throughout the years. The junior program is headed by Mike Benchimol, a head instructor who is no stranger to being in charge.

"This summer plans on being one of our biggest yet and we have been preparing with the manual stuff all week."

The 12 instructors have the pleasure of each getting their own motor boat and small class sizes under their supervision. Any problems they may come across with engines are fixed by their head dock man, coming to their rescue. With all the great perks, the instructors can't really complain about the rough stuff they endured this week, which really only consisted of moving and fixing the boats for the season's start.

Good Luck Port Wash, and we will see your sailors out there soon!
