Jeez, and we thought testing was done for the year! The strength and mentality of every junior sailor in San Francisco was challenged yesterday and they anticipate more at the 2008 Youth Champs at SFYC. The races began after a 2 day clinic in nothing less than 12kts. From there, it only built. By the end of the first day it was nuking at 20+. More wind is expected.
Needless to say, when you put all the nation's best junior sailors on one race course, it's going to be pretty tight. So far the California natives have been taking the top of the fleets with the exception of a 2nd in the lasers from our own Cam Cullman. (Need I also remind you that JSA bred the 2005, 2004 420 winners and the 1998 Europe winner as well?!) We've also got 2 top 10 boats in the 420 so far & a 9th in Laser.
Let's give these kids a little credit, because I'm sure on the West Coast they're giving us a set of exhausted thumbs up. The JSA reps at Youths for 2008 are as follows:
- Jordan Factor/Liv Gunnarsson from LISOT
- Brendan Kopp/Mike Costello from Pequot
- Lucas Edegran/Bianca Rom from Larchmont & LISOT
- Matt Wefer/Alex Hering (my baby bro!) from Sea Cliffe & CYC
- Matt Zupon from Larchmont
- Cam Cullman from American
- Ted Himler from Manhasset Bay
- Ben Leibowitz from STAM

I read that it's reached 25+kts every day so far...that's like the anti- LI Sound in the summer.
If the JSA sailors can hold their own in those conditions, then I tip my hat to them.
Go get 'em JSA'ers.
