There was only one start today at Opti Champs in Manhasset Bay. However, for once it wasn't because of a lack of wind. The day began with a nasty accident on I-95 that delayed the arrival of all clubs due north, followed by several storm cells in the area which both sucked up wind and brought some, and ending with a whipping current that caused 3 general recalls.
The only threatening weather systems came at about lunch time and at the end of the first race. By the time the RC attempted to start the yellow and red fleets (green and blue were first start) the breeze shifted about 40 degrees to the north. After 2 gen. recalls with yellow and red, it was impossible to redrop the marks, run a race, and get all the sailors back safely before the next storm.
Unfortunate, yes, but all these moves were executed ingeniously by the race committee. Check back tomorrow for (hopefully) a more happening update on Opti Champs 2008!
