As a former junior sailor, I never really fully appreciated everything that was done to make our regattas the best ever. So much effort is put forth from the race committees, yacht clubs, and most of all parents to make sure everything is run smoothly. Reporting from San Diego were a few members (and Mom's!) of our JSA board, Amy Kellogg and Tricia Leicht, doing all they could to make the 2009 season and onward the best summers ever. Read on to hear what they've been upto:
From Jan 8 - 10, instructors, program managers, yachting professionals and industry leaders met in San Diego California for the USSAILING National Sailing Program Symposium. Representing JSA were Board Member Tricia Leicht and Former Chairperson, Amy Kellogg. For three days, participants attended a wide-variety of workshops given by some of the best in their field. Topics included Race Management, Curriculum Development, Double Goal Coaching, Powerboat Training, Hiring Practices, On and Off the Water Drills, Program Evaluation, Adaptive Training, 2009 Tax Changes for Not-For-Profits, Coast Guard
Licensing Requirements and more. General session highlights included presentations by JSA's own Dave Perry on the 2009 Rule Changes, and discussions with Olympic Gold Medalist, Anna Tunnicliffe and Paralympic Coach, Betsey Alision. A behind the scenes look at the making of Morning Light with Robbie Haines and Stan Honey and a presentation by Scuttlebutt's own Craig Leweck were also both entertaining and informative. On-the-water boat demonstrations of Team Racing, Moths, 29er, Bic and Laser Performance boats at the Coronado Yacht Club rounded out the symposium. JSA representatives have returned to New York energized with many new ideas to share with instructors, race committees, sailors and program chairs. Every program should consider sending a representative to next year's symposium in Houston, Texas.
