The young ladies who participated in the JSA Girls Champs Pre-Leiter Warmup Clinic and Regatta had a great weekend full of awesome sailing. The weekend started with a clinic coordinated by the Oyster Bay Sailing Foundation on Saturday the 11th, which has been a long time supporter of this event for many years. The final day of the weekend, Sunday the 12th was a day of racing, and boy hah or in this case shall I say girl, did they race!
The races were held just to the East of Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club (if facing), in the mix between Oyster Bay/Cold Spring Harbor/ and the Long Island Sound. The race committee raced 6 windward-leewards in a beautiful 8-12 knots, gusts up to 14. Even better was the gorgeous sunny day with not a rain cloud in the sky for the competitors.
Out of the 18 competitors, only one can be crowned champ. This year's JSA Girls Championship was won by Sarah Stubbs, 15, from American Yacht Club. I recently interviewed Sarah at the Law Trophy just last week and it's really nice to see someone working hard to make it to the top! I got a chance to speak with Sarah's mom as Sarah could hardly catch her breath in excitement.
When asked about the racing Mrs. Stubbs happily gave me the details.
"Well it was very close, only one point between Sarah and the second place boat going into the last race. But with a drop, and 4 bullets, Sarah's final score was only 7! Only a four point gap between the first two boats in the final standings. We are very excited for Sarah, especially because Sarah's sister Emily won the same title twice before her." Good luck or good genes?? How 'bout both!
Congratulations to all the girls who participated, and congrats again to Sarah for winning the JSA Girls Champs, but also the Area B title. Good luck at the Junior Women's Single-Handed National Championship!
*Special thanks to the Regatta Chair-Bob Dixon, Principal Officer- Anne Mooney, and the Event Coordinator-Lianna Gordan. Check for full results by going to the
