To All Beach Point Junior Overnight Participants
As the PRO of the 2009 Beach Point Junior Overnight, I would like to express my and Beach Point’s appreciation and thanks to all participants of this year’s Race. As you know, we experienced extremely challenging sailing conditions during a violent and unexpected squall line. Although the squall was brief, it was intense.
Approximately half the boats withdrew from the Race and sought shelter before the squall. A significant number of the remainder either used their engines to maneuver or had senior advisors take command. With heavy rain, lightening and winds in excess of 50 knots, I am certain it was a memorable experience for all concerned. Actions taken by all participants were appropriate and courageous. Thankfully, there were no serious injuries or damage.
After due consideration of the consequences for all boats in the race and discussion with the JSA, a USSAILING certified judge, as well as competitors and advisors, the Race Committee has decided to invoke Rule 32 (e) and declare the Race abandoned. The Race Committee has concluded that in addition to the extreme conditions experienced by some, if not all of the competitors, the number of withdrawals, reported engine use and widespread command by senior advisors/boat owners, while appropriate given the conditions, did not permit a fair race which reflected the sailing performance of the junior competitors.
Thank you all for your participation. We look forward to seeing you at future Beach Point Junior Overnights.
