The America's Cup is underway, but how has the world's oldest active sport's trophy become so scientifically updated??
Valencia, Spain. Off the shores of this Spanish city, the 33rd America's Cup will take place. The boats competing for the title this year, BMW Oracle, and Alinghi, are two very high tech machines. The two trimarans are designed to be light, fast, and take no prisoners, or in this case no fear of the sea. The two vessels have spent years, and endless amounts of dollars to become some of the worlds fastest sailing crafts. The two boats travel two even three times faster then the wind, creating a lifting affect. The physics that goes behind designing these boats is critiqued by an article in the San Diego Union Tribune. The author Scott Lafee goes in depth in describing the science behind sailing, and how the America's cup takes the principles of sailing to a whole new level. Check it out at SignOnSanDiego.com.
