CT teenager's sailing trip abroad ends in open water
New Canaan’s Chase Barada, 18, climbs the mast of the SV Concordia, a 188-foot-long sail training vessel he was aboard for five months through a study abroad program before it sunk off the coast of Brazil last week.
For the crew of the SV Concordia, Wednesday, February 17, had the makings of a classic sailing day. The sky was partly cloudy, the temperature warm; winds were blowing in from the Northwest at about 30 knots and sea swells topped 15 feet.Eighteen-year-old Chase Barada, a 2009 New Canaan High School graduate, was five months into a 10-month sailing trip around the world with the Canada-based Class Afloat program when the ship he and 63 others were aboard sank off the coast of Brazil, They were en route to Uruguay.
